What are the various sections in a kitchen?
You can choose to specialise in Pastry, Bakery, Butchery, Garde Manger, or get an all rounded experience as a Chef. You can also find your calling in a particular cuisine. The Hot kitchen section can be divided by cuisines and is the main kitchen. Bakery and Pastry section is where the breads, cold desserts, pastries and chocolates are made. Banquets/ Events section look after large catering. Butchery is for cuts of meats, poultry and fish. Each kitchen can also be broken down into other sub sections or station like Sauteing, Grills, Fry and separately for sauces.
Can I work only in one section?
You can study and train in a good culinary school and then choose to specialise only in one section or in one cuisine. Sometimes Pastry Chefs learn only Pastry making and baking and go on to start their own Boulangerie and Patisserie.
What are the prospects in Specialisation?
An experienced Chef in a particular cuisine or section is able to enhance his skills in that area and become an expert. This skill and experience may play an important role when starting one's own restaurant. At the same time, an all rounded Chef can lead a wider team and a wider chain of multi cuisine restaurants. Follow your passion and seek out opportunities. Act on them.
Is it easier to become a Pastry Chef than an all rounded Chef?
Pastry skills are very precise, needs patience and loads of planning. A lot of technological advancements have come to this section. You have to discover your passion and your skills to choose and excel in one specific section of this industry.
